ON CONNECTION

I’ve broken rules and taken risks in the past. I thought these things made me feel alive. I see now that they’re quick thrills, a temporary rush. What makes me feel alive today is something I took for granted in the past: Connection.

Connection can be with friends or family. It can be with a place. A book. A work of art. Connection can be with a song that touches you deeply, a butterfly that lands on your shoulder, a sunset, a stranger next to you on a plane with whom you share a lovely conversation. Connection is anything that makes you think, “I was meant to be exactly here, exactly now.” THAT is feeling alive.

And so, for the past 13 years (that have seen much change), my greatest, my constant connection has been with Picard. He’s been my friend, my fun, my heart, my home. On our walks, I’ve made friends I never would have otherwise met. Picard inspired me to earn an MA in Anthrozoology, and feel a whole new connection to (and respect for) all earthlings, not just humans.

HAPPY 13TH ANNIVERSARY, PICARD! Thank you for choosing me to be your human.
